Neapolitans Recipe
For something sweet and delicious, try out these delicious Neapolitans. With a little effort, you can have a delicious snack prepared and stored to satisfy you sweet cravings at anytime.
Ingredients
Dark Dough:
Shortening - 1 cup
Brown sugar - 1 1/2 cups, firmly packed
Eggs - 2
Sifted flour - 3 cups
Salt - 1/4 teaspoon
Soda - 1 teaspoon
Cinnamon - 1/2 teaspoon
Cloves - 1/2 teaspoon
Nuts - 1 cup, coarsely-ground
Semi-sweet chocolate morsels - 1 package (1 cup), ground
Light Dough:
Shortening - 1/2 cup
Sugar - 3/4 cup
Egg - 1
Vanilla - 1 teaspoon
Almond extract - 1/2 teaspoon
Water - 2 tablespoons
Sifted flour - 2 cups
Salt - 1/2 teaspoon
Soda - 1/4 teaspoon
Raisins - 3/4 cup, finely chopped
Candied cherries - 12, chopped
Directions
GETTING READY
1) Using waxed paper, line 10 x 5 x 3-inch loaf pan.
MAKING
2) For the dark dough, combine and cream the shortening and sugar till light and fluffy.
3) Add in the eggs and beat well.
4) Combine and sift the flour, salt, soda, cinnamon, and cloves.
5) Add into the creamed mix and blend well.
6) Add in the nuts and ground chocolate and mix well.
7) Place half the dark dough firmly into the lined pan.
8) For the light dough, combine and cream the shortening and sugar till light and fluffy.
9) Add in the egg, vanilla, almond extract, and water and beat well.
10) Combine and sift the flour, salt, and soda, and add into the creamed mix.
11) Add in the remaining ingredients and blend well.
12) Pack into the loaf pan, over the dark dough.
13) Add in the remaining dark dough and pack well.
14) Chill for 24 hours.
15) Turn out and cut in thirds, lengthwise.
16) Cut each third into 1/4 inch thick slices.
17) Place in the oven at 400° F and bake for 10 minutes.
