Directions

Place the flour in a 2-quart bowl.
Add the baking powder, sugar, salt and cream of tartar and toss lightly.
Cut in the shortening with pastry blender until mixture is consistency of peas.
Make a well in center and pour in half the milk.
Mix well.
Add the egg and remaining milk and mix lightly.
Turn out on a lightly floured surface and roll to 1/2 to 3/4-inch thickness.
Cut with lightly floured 2-inch biscuit cutter and place on a cookie sheet.
Bake at 400 degrees for 12 to 15 minutes or until lightly browned.
