Ingredients

 
1 1 1/2-to-2-lb (750 g-1 kg) turnip
 
4 medium-sized potatoes peeled and sliced
 
1/2 cup (125 mL) consomme or water
 
1/2 tsp (2 mL) sugar
 
1/4 tsp (1 mL) pepper
 
1 tsp (5 mL) savory
 
2 to 3 tbsp (30 to 50 mL) butter

Directions

Peel the turnip and cut into thin slices.
Add to the potatoes.
Pour the consomme or the water on top.
Add the sugar, pepper and savory.
Stir to mix.
Cover.
Microwave at HIGH 12 to 14 minutes.
Stir after 10 minutes and check the tenderness of the vegetables.
When done, drain through a sieve, reserving the liquid.
Add the butter and mash the vegetables.
Adjust salt and pepper.
If a little liquid is needed, use the reserved cooking water, adding a spoonful at a time.
This can be prepared ahead of time and kept at room temperature.
To warm, microwave at MEDIUM-HIGH 3 to 4 minutes, uncovered.
