Marzipan Apples Recipe

Ingredients

 
1 1/2 cups blanched whole almonds
 
1 1/2 cups confectioners' sugar
 
1 egg white
 
1 1/4 teaspoons almond extract
 
1/4 teaspoon salt
 
Green food coloring
 
Red food coloring
 
Water
 
About 20 whole cloves

Directions

1. In blender at medium speed or in food processor with knife blade attached, finely grind almonds, 1/2 cup at a time. In medium-sized bowl, mix ground almonds, confectioners' sugar, egg white, almond extract, salt, and enough green food coloring to tint an attractive apple-green. With hands, knead to make a stiff paste.
2. Shape 1 tablespoon dough into an apple (cover remaining dough with plastic wrap); repeat until all dough is used. Using a small artist's brush, tint apples with red food coloring diluted with water. Press stems from cloves partway into tops of apples. Let apples dry on wire rack about 30 minutes.
