 Unsweetened chocolate square1/2
 Cake flour1/2 Cup (16 tbs), sifted
 Salt3/4 Teaspoon
 Baking powder3 Teaspoon
 1/2 cup butter or regular margarine, softened
 Sugar1/2 Cup (16 tbs)
 Eggs3
 Vanilla extract3/4 Teaspoon
 Milk3/4 Cup (16 tbs)
  Sift before measuring.

Directions

Melt chocolate over hot, not boiling, water.
Let cool.
Preheat oven to 350F.
Grease and flour a 9-by-5- by-3-inch loaf pan.
Sift flour with salt and baking powder; set aside.
In large bowl of electric mixer, at medium speed, beat butter and sugar until light.
Add eggs and vanilla, beating until very light and fluffy.
At low speed, beat in flour mixture (in fourths), alternately with milk (in thirds), beginning and ending with flour mixture.
In medium bowl, combine about one third bat- ter with chocolate, mixing well.
Spoon plain and chocolate batters, alternately, into prepared pan.
With spatula or knife, cut through batter, forming a Z.
Bake 65 minutes, or until cake tester inserted in center comes out clean.
Cool in pan 15 minutes.
Remove from pan; cool thoroughly on wire rack.
To serve, cut in thin slices.
