Ingredients

3 cups all-purpose flour
6 teaspoons baking powder
3 tablespoons chilled butter or margarine
1 cup milk
Vegetable oil

How to make Maori Bread

Step 1-Mix the flour and baking powder in a mixing bowl.

Step 2-Using a cheese grater, grate the butter into the flour mixture.

Step 3-Mix it with your fingers until the mixture crumbles. Add the milk until you can form a ball with the dough.

Step 4-Dust your counter with flour. Roll out the dough to a 1-inch thickness. Cut the dough into 2 1/2-inch squares.

Step 5-Fill an electric frying pan with 2 inches of vegetable oil and heat over medium heat. When the oil is hot, fry each square until it turns golden brown on each side.

Step 6-Remove the bread with tongs and set it on a paper towel or brown bag to cool.

I tried out this recipe, it was nice although its not the same as the maori bread I remember from my childhood. This recipe makes a very nice "melt in the mouth" crumblyish fry bread, whereas I am more accustomed to the one with a more "chewy" texture along with a sweet taste, kind of like a doughnut flavoured fry bread hehe.
