Shortening-1/2 cup
 
Light brown sugar-1 cup, (packed)
 
Egg-1
 
Vanilla-1 1/2 teaspoons
 
All-purpose flour-3/4 cup
 
Baking soda-1/2 teaspoon
 
Salt-3/4 teaspoon
 
Quick oats-2 cups
 
Chocolate chips-1, (6-ounces) package
 
Butter-1 tablespoon
 
Sweetened condensed milk-1 can
 
Nuts-1/2 cup, chopped

Directions

MAKING
1)In a bowl, beat together shortening and sugar.
2)Add egg and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla and beat.
3)In a bowl, mix together flour, soda and 1/4 tea- spoon salt and add to creamed mixture.
4)Add oats and keep aside 1 cup oat mixture.
5)Take a 10 x 7-inch pan and press remaining oat mixture against its bottom.
6)In a double boiler mix chocolate chips, butter, condensed milk and remaining salt.
7)Stir until chocolate chips are melted over boiling water and add remaining vanilla and nuts.
8)Spread the mixture on oat layer and then spread the reserved oat mixture over top.
9)Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes.

SERVING
10)Slice the fudge into bars and serve it to the kids.
