Layered Nut Bars Recipe

Ingredients
The base:
1 cup sifted all purpose flour
1 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1/2 cup shortening
The topping:
2 tablespoons flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 eggs
1 cup packed brown sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3/4 cup chopped pecans or walnuts
1 cup flaked coconut
Directions
1. Preheat oven to moderate (350° F.).
2. Grease, line with paper and grease again a 9 by 9-inch square pan.
3. Mix flour and sugar. Gut in shortening and mix till crumbly. Press into prepared pan and bake for fifteen minutes. While this is baking, prepare topping.

2. Beat eggs until very light. Add sugar gradually and beat till fluffy. Add vanilla.
3. Add dry ingredients; mix and add nuts and coconut.
4. Pour over baked base. Return to oven and bake about thirty minutes. Cool in pan, turn out and cut into bars or squares. If desired, serve sprinkled with confectioners' sugar.
