Add sugar gradually, creaming well.
Add cognac and vanilla.
Gradually work in flour to make a soft dough.
Chill 2 1/2 to 3 hours.
Pinch off small pieces of dough and shape into oblong cookies.
Center each with a whole clove.
Bake on ungreased cookie sheet in 325° oven for 25 to 30 minutes.
(Cookies will not be brown.) Cool on cookie sheet.
Sift on additional powdered sugar, being careful that each cookie is generously and evenly coated.
