Ingredients

 
3 cups sifted flour
 
2/3 cup sugar
 
1 t baking powder
 
1 t salt
 
1 t soda
 
1 1/2 cups currants or dash seedless raisins
 
2 eggs, beaten
 
1 3/4 to 2 cups buttermilk
 
2 t melted shortening

Directions

Sift together into large bowl flour, sugar, baking powder, salt and soda.
Stir in currants or raisins.
Combine eggs, buttermilk and shortening.
Add liquid mixture to dry ingredients and mix just until flour is moistened.
Turn batter into greased loaf pan, 51/4 x 91/2 inches.
Bake in moderate oven at 350 ° about 1 hour.
Remove from pan immediately.
Allow to cool thoroughly before slicing.
