Directions

Combine flour, soda, baking powder, salt, and sugar in a large bowl; cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse meal.
Add caraway seeds, if desired.
Gradually add buttermilk.
Turn dough out onto a floured surface and knead lightly.
Shape into a ball.
Place in a well-greased 9- x 5- x 3-inch loafpan or 8-inch ovenproof skillet.
Cut a cross in top of bread; brush with milk.
Bake at 375° for 40 to 50 minutes.
