4 cups unsifted all-purpose flour
1/4 cup sugar
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup butter or margarine
2 cups dark raisins
1 1/3 cups buttermilk
1 egg
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 egg yolk
1 tablespoon water
Directions
Grease a deep, 2 1/2-quart, heat-resistant, non-metallic caserole and set aside.
Sift flour, sugar, baking powder and salt together into a large bowl.
With a pastry blender or 2 knives, cut in butter until mixture resembles commeal.
Stir in raisins.
Combine buttermilk, egg and baking soda in a small bowl until thoroughly blended.
Stir buttermilk mixture into dry ingredients until well blended.
Turn out onto a lightly floured board and knead lightly about 3 minutes or until dough is smooth.
Shape dough into a ball and place in prepared casserole.
With a sharp knife cut an "X" about 1/2 -inch deep into the top of the dough.
Beat egg yolk and water together.
Brush mixture over top of dough.
Cook, uncovered, on medium for 14 minutes or until a cake tester inserted in the center comes out clean.
Cool 10 minutes in casserole; turn out of pan and allow to cool completely.
