Indian Style Split Pea Soup Recipe
Ingredients
| 1 cracked ham hock (about 1 lb.) | ||
| 2 atsp water | ||
| 1 1/2 cup green or yellow split peas, picked over and rinsed | ||
| Onion | 1 Small, finely chopped | |
| Ground coriander | 1 Teaspoon | |
| Cumin | 1 Teaspoon | |
| Turmeric | 1/4 Teaspoon | |
| Lemon juice | 1 Teaspoon | |
| Sugar | 1 Teaspoon | |
| Salt | To Taste | |
Directions
Place ham hock in a deep pan and cover with the 2 quarts water.
Bring to a boil and simmer 10 minutes.
Drain and save liquid.
Set aside.
Add peas, onion, and liquid to ham hock.
Cover and simmer until peas are soft, about 1 1/2 hours.
Remove ham hock, discard bone and fat, cut meat into small pieces.
Set aside.
Remove peas with a slotted spoon.
Put peas through a food mill or blend in a blender or food processor until smooth.
Return peas to the pot.
Add spices, lemon juice, and sugar and salt to taste.
Add the ham bits.
Simmer 10-15 minutes longer.
Serve with chopped fresh coriander or parsley and chopped salted peanuts.
(Use coriander sparingly as its flavor is very pronounced.)
