Ingredients

 
Milk-1/4 cup
 
Sugar-1/2 cup
 
Salt-1/2 teaspoon
 
Shortening-1/4 cup melted
 
Warm water-1/4 cup
 
Cake yeast, active dry or compressed-1 package
 
Egg-1
 
All-purpose flour-2 1/4 cups, sifted
 
Butter or margarine-1/4 cup, melted
 
Sugar-3/4 cup
 
Cinnamon-3 teaspoons
 
Raisins-1/4 cup

Directions

MAKING
1)In a saucepan, scald milk, add sugar, salt and shortening.
2)Cool to lukewarm.
3)In a large mixing bowl, add water and yeast.
4)Dissolve yeast and add lukewarm milk mixture.
5)Add egg and beat.
6)Mix in cinnamon and flour to make soft dough.
7)Knead the dough on a lightly floured board until smooth and elastic.
8)Take an oiled bowl and put the dough in it.
9)Cover the bowl and let dough rise to double.
10)Punch down and then knead a bit and shape dough into sixteen 1 1/2-inch balls.
11)Roll in butter and combined sugar and cinnamon.
12)Take an oiled 8-inch tube pan and put 8 balls in it.
13)Arrange remaining balls on top of first layer, to cover the space between the two below.
14)Sprinkle with raisins.
15)Now, cover and let rise until double in bulk.
16)Bake at 350 degrees for about 40-50 minutes.

SERVING
17)Serve the Hungarian coffee cake with tea or coffee.
