Directions

1. Combine the sugar, salt, chocolate (broken into pieces), milk and the butter or margarine in a saucepan; heat slowly, stirring constantly until the sugar is dissolved.
2. Cover the saucepan and boil 2 minutes. Then remove the cover and continue boiling to the soft ball stage, 234° F., or till a little of the syrup forms a soft ball when dropped from a spoon into a cup of cold water.
3. Remove from the heat, add the vanilla and mix thoroughly.
