Directions

1. Onto a piece of wax paper, sift the flour, baking powder, cinnamon, baking soda, salt, and nutmeg. In a large bowl, whisk the eggs, butter, and sugar until light yellow and frothy.
2. Add the flour mixture, 1 cup at a time, alternately with the buttermilk, stirring until a dough forms. Divide into 2 equal pieces and refrigerate for 1 hour.
3. On a lightly floured surface, roll out each piece of dough into a 12-inch circle, 1/2 inch thick. Using a 3-inch doughnut cutter, cut out a total of 16 doughnuts and holes, re-rolling the scraps (but not the holes) as you go.
4. In a deep 12-inch skillet, heat 1 inch of oil over moderately high heat to 360°F. or until a 1-inch cube of bread browns in 30 seconds. Cook doughnuts and holes in batches, turning once, for 3 minutes or until golden. Drain on paper towels.
5. To make the glaze: In a small saucepan, bring all of the ingredients to a simmer over moderately high heat. Cook, uncovered, for 5 minutes, then remove from the heat and keep warm. Using a fork, dip each warm doughnut into the glaze for a few seconds, then transfer to a rack to cool. Serve with mugs of coffee or Hot Chocolate.
