Ingredients

 Lentils1 pound, dried
 Water6 Cup (16 tbs)
 Onions2 Medium, chopped
 4 carrots sliced cubed or trimmed in the shape of round balls
 Thyme1 Teaspoon
 Bay Leaf1
 Salt1 Teaspoon
 Sugar2 Tablespoon
 Whole black peppercorns10 To taste
 4 to 5 ounces heavily cured ham or Canadian bacon, cut into 1/2 inch cubes
 Dry red wine1/2 Cup (16 tbs)

Directions

Combine all ingredients, except for the wine, in the slow cooker.
Cover and cook on low 6 to 8 hours.
Just before serving, stir in the red wine.
Adjust seasonings, if necessary.
Additional water may be added for a thinner consistency.
