Ingredients

 
1/2 tablespoon active dry yeast
 
2 tablespoons warm water (105°- 115°F)
 
1/4 cup dairy sour cream
 
4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
 
1/4 teaspoon salt
 
3 tablespoons sugar
 
1 - 1 1/2 cups flour
 
1/2 teaspoon grated lemon peel
 
1 egg
 
2 tablespoons chopped candied cherries
 
2 tablespoons chopped walnuts sugar

Directions

1 Dissolve yeast in warm water. Set aside for 5 minutes. Heat sour cream, butter, salt, and sugar to warm (105°€”115°F).
2 Combine 1 cup flour, lemon peel, yeast mixture, egg, and milk mixture in mixing bowl. Mix thoroughly.
3 Knead in cherries and walnuts. Cover; place in refrigerator 2€”24 hours.
4 Sprinkle surface lightly with sugar. Roll dough into an 8 x 12-inch rectangle. Sprinkle dough lightly with sugar. Fold dough from 2 opposite sides, making 3 layers. Repeat twice.
5 Roll into an 8 x 12-inch rectangle. Cut into strips 4 inches long and 1 inch wide. Holding up, twist strips 3 or 4 times. Place 1 inch apart on greased baking sheet.
6 Bake in a preheated 375°F oven 15€”20 minutes or until done. Cool on wire rack.
