Ingredients
1 1/2 cups water
2 cups dates, chopped
1 tbsp lemon juice
3/4 cup butter
1 cup brown sugar
3/4 cup whole wheat flour
1/2 cup all purpose flour
3/4 cup bran flakes
1/2 cup rolled oats
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
Directions
Preheat oven to 400 °F (205 °C).
Butter a square 9 inch (23 cm) baking pan.
Set aside.
In a saucepan, bring to a boil water, dates and lemon juice.
Reduce heat.
While stirring, simmer until mixture thickens slightly.
Set aside.
In a bowl, cream butter and brown sugar.
Fold in remaining ingredients.
Over bottom of pan, press two thirds of mixture.
Cover with date mixture.
Pour remaining third on top.
Bake in oven 25 minutes or until golden brown.
Remove from oven.
Let stand 15 minutes before cutting into squares.
