6 to 8 cups tortilla chips
 
4 cups (about 1 lb.) shredded jack or mild Cheddar cheese (or half of each)
 
1 can (4 oz.) whole California green chiles (for mildest flavor, remove seeds and pith), chopped

Directions

Spread tortilla chips equally about one layer deep (they overlap) in 2 shallow-rimmed 10 or 11-inch baking pans or ovenproof plates.
Sprinkle tortillas evenly with cheese, then chiles.
Place both pans, uncovered, in a 400° oven for about 5 minutes or until cheese melts.
