Place beans in a medium saucepan with 3 cups of water and bring to boil over high heat.
Cover, reduce heat to moderate and cook 20 minutes.
Meanwhile heat 1 tbs olive oil in a large skillet over moderate heat.
Add chopped onion and garlic and saute until onions are softened.
Combine drained beans, onion, garlic, mushrooms and sauce and turn into a lightly oiled 2-quart casserole.
Combine remaining 2 tbs olive oil with the bread crumbs and sprinkle evenly over the top of the casserole.
Bake, uncovered, in a 350°F (180°C) oven for 20 minutes or until hot.
