Ingredients
1/4 cup lard, vegetable oil or margarine
2 cups sugar
2 large eggs
1/2 cup medium molasses
4 cups flour
4 teaspoons baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons cinnamon
2 tablespoons ginger
1 tablespoon ground cloves
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
Directions
Cream the lard and sugar in a mixing bowl until light and fluffy.
Beat in the eggs and molasses.
Sift together the flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, ginger, cloves and nutmeg.
Add to the molasses mixture and beat until smooth.
Chill, wrapped in plastic wrap, for 1 to 10 hours.
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees about 15 minutes before baking.
Shape the dough into 1-inch balls and dip in sugar.
Place sugar side up about 2 inches apart on a nonstick cookie sheet.
Bake at 375 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes or until done to taste.
