Ingredients

3 1/2-4 cups flour

1 tablespoon active dry yeast

1/2 teaspoon grated lemon peel

1/2 teaspoon aniseeds

3/4 cup milk

1 stick unsalted butter

1/4 cup sugar

1/4 teaspoon salt

2 eggs

1/2 cup golden raisins

Sugar

Sliced almonds

Glaze

1 egg, beaten with 1 tablespoon water

Directions

1 Combine 1 1/2 cups flour, yeast, lemon peel, and aniseeds in mixing bowl.
2 Heat milk, butter, sugar, and salt to hot (120°-130°F). Add milk mixture to flour mixture. Mix thoroughly.
3 Add eggs, raisins, and enough remaining flour to make a soft dough.
4 Knead on lightly floured surface until smooth€”about 10 minutes. Place in greased bowl, turning to coat top.
5 Let rise in warm place until double€”about 1 hour.
6 Punch down dough. Divide dough into 3 equal pieces. Roll into 22-inch ropes. Braid. Place on greased baking sheet and shape into a circle.
7 Make glaze and brush on loaf. Sprinkle lightly with sugar; place almonds on top.
8 Let rise in warm place€”about 10 minutes. Don't worry about any cracks in the top surface after it is baked.
9 Bake in a preheated 350°F oven for 30 minutes or until done. Cool on wire rack.
