Directions

In a saucepan on medium heat add in milk, water, salt, butter and sugar. Bring to a boil, remove from heat and gradually add in cornmeal -- stirring vigorously and constantly. Once cornmeal is mixed in place back on the stove and place on medium/low heat until mixture thickens to desired consistency. Pour out into a bowl and serve with fruit, milk, cream, butter, sugar, cinnamon, brown sugar or any flavors you like. NOTE: for a healthier version you can substitute whole milk with fat free milk or water and butter can be substituted with margarine. Enjoy!!!

When I was young, my mom made a similar breakfast cereal, but it was not using cornmeal....it was some kind of white flour and it made the cereal white, smooth and creamy in consistency. Would anyone know how to make that version?

Hi, your mom may be using cream of wheat (ground wheat or farina also called semolina) to make the porridge that is why it was white, smooth and creamy. Follow the same recipe using cream of wheat and you will get something similar to what your mom made for you!
