Ingredients

 
1/2 tablespoon active dry yeast
 
3 tablespoons warm water (105°-115°F)
 
1/2 cup milk
 
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
 
1/4 teaspoon salt
 
1/4 cup sugar
 
2-2 1/2 cups flour
 
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
 
1/4 teaspoon grated nutmeg
 
1/2 teaspoon ground mace
 
1 egg
 
1/3 cup golden raisins
 
1/3 cup chopped walnuts or pecans
 
1/4 cup chopped mixed candied fruit

Directions

1 Dissolve yeast in warm water. Set aside for 5 minutes. Heat milk, butter, salt, and sugar to warm (105°-115°F).
2 Combine 1 1/2 cups flour, spices, yeast mixture, and milk mixture. Mix thoroughly.
3 Add egg and enough remaining flour to make a soft dough. Knead in raisins, nuts, and candied fruit. Knead on lightly floured surface until smooth€”about 10 minutes.
4 Place in greased bowl, turning to coat top. Cover; let rise in warm place until double€”about 1 hour.
5 Punch down dough. Divide dough into 12 equal pieces. Place on greased baking sheet. Cover; let rise in warm place for about 30 minutes or until double.
6 Bake in a preheated 375°F oven for 20 minutes or until done. Cool on wire rack.
