Ingredients

 
1 tablespoon active dry yeast
 
2 tablespoons warm water (105°-115°F)
 
2-3 cups flour
 
1/2 cup warm milk (105°-115°F)
 
1/4 cup sugar
 
1/4 teaspoon grated nutmeg
 
1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
 
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
 
1/2 teaspoon salt
 
1 egg
 
1/3 cup golden raisins
 
1/3 cup chopped mixed candied fruit
 
Confectioners' Icing, if desired
 
Walnut halves or candied cherries

Directions

1 Dissolve yeast in warm water. Set aside for 5 minutes. Combine 1 1/2 cups flour, warm milk, sugar, nutmeg, allspice, butter, and salt in mixing bowl. Mix thoroughly.
2 Add yeast mixture and egg. Mix. Add raisins, candied fruit, and enough remaining flour to make a soft dough.
3 Knead on lightly floured surface until smooth€”about 10 minutes. Place in greased bowl, turning to coat top.
4 Cover; let rise in warm place until double€”about 1 hour. Punch down dough.
5 Make in any of the following shapes:
Standard Loaf
6 Shape dough into loaf. Place in greased 4 1/2 x 8 1/2-inch pan.
7 Cover; let rise in warm place until double€”about 45€”60 minutes. Bake in a preheated 350°F oven 45€”60 minutes or until done. Cool on wire rack.
8 If desired, drizzle top of loaf with Confectioners' Icing. Trim with walnut halves or candied cherries.
Round Loaf
6 Shape dough into a ball. Place ball on greased baking sheet, flattening slightly.
7 Cover; let rise in warm place until double€”about 1 hour.
8 Bake in preheated 350°F oven about 30€”40 minutes or until done. Cool on wire rack.
9 If desired, drizzle top with Confectioners' Icing. Trim with walnut halves or candied cherries.
Individual Loaves
6 Divide dough into 4 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a loaf and place in greased 3 x 5 1/2-inch loaf pans.
7 Cover; let rise in warm place until double€”about 30 minutes. Bake in preheated 350°F oven 20€”30 minutes or until done. Cool on wire rack.
8 If desired, drizzle top of each with Confectioners' Icing. Trim with walnut halves or candied cherries.
Miniature Treats
6 Shape dough into 12 balls. Place in greased muffin pan. Cover; let rise in warm place until double€”about 20 minutes.
7 Bake in preheated 350°F oven about 20€”25 minutes or until done. Cool on wire rack.
8 If desired, drizzle the top of each with Confectioners' Icing. Trim with walnut halves or candied cherries.
