 Garlic3 , crushed
 Cumin seeds1⁄2 Teaspoon
 Onion1⁄2 , julienned
 Turmeric powder2 Pinch
 Salt To Taste

Directions

Heat 3 tbs oil in a shallow pan. Add Toor Dal, 1/4rth tsp cumin seeds, green chillies, 1 crushed garlic pod & onions. Keep stirring the Dal until it turns brownish. Make sure you don't fry until it burns or turns dark brown.

Transfer fried Dal to a pressure cooker. Add 2 & half cups water, turmeric powder & pressure cook up to 4 whistles. Remove lid, smash toor dal with a spatula if needed.

For seasoning, heat 1 tbs oil in a pan. Add remaining 1/4rth tsp cumin seeds, 2 crushed garlic pods, dry red chillies & curry leaves.

Add this seasoning to Dal. Add salt as per taste.

Serve Hot with Jeera Rice / Rotis.

Hi. You may be able to boil Toor Dal in the rice cooker. I am not very sure about it though, haven't tried it before. Also I am thinking it may become soft but may be not mashy like in the pressure cooker

OK DONE. It turned out yummy !!! my only concern was that this is the first time I didn't wash the daal prior to cooking..makes me a little nervous. What if we wash the daal prior to frying?
