Sweet Fig Bars Recipe

Combine with water, sugar and pinch of salt in saucepan.
Bring to a boil, then turn down heat and simmer until mixture is very thick, about 15 minutes.
Remove from heat and cool.
Cream shortening, add brown sugar and continue creaming until light and fluffy.
Add eggs and beat well.
Sift flour, salt and cream of tartar together.
Add half to creamed mixture.
Add vanilla and soda which has been dissolved in hot water.
Stir in remaining dry ingredients and mix until well blended.
Chill several hours or overnight.
Heat oven to 375 degrees.
Roll dough 1/8 inch thick on floured board and cut into long strips 3 inches wide.
Spoon some of fig filling down centre of each strip and fold sides of dough over filling so they overlap.
Cut strips into 1 1/2-inch lengths.
Put on lightly-floured cookie sheet, folded side down.
Bake 12 to 15 minutes or until golden brown.
