2 slices rye bread
 
Butter
 
2 slices ham
 
3/4 cup grated Gouda cheese
 
Garnish:
 
Cucumber slices
 
Red pepper rings
 
Parsley sprigs

Directions

Spread the bread with butter.
Arrange the ham slices on top, then the grated cheese.
Garnish each elaborately with the cucumber, red pepper and parsley.
These sandwiches are easier to eat with a knife and fork.
Variations: Use the ham and cheese as a base, then add a selection of the following toppings: tomato slices; mustard and cress; shredded lettuce; halved green olives; gherkin fans; spring onions (scallions); watercress; red cabbage; green pepper rings; walnuts; pineapple rings; cocktail cherries; radish slices.
