Dutch Apple Doughnuts Recipe

Ingredients
Warm water - 1/4 cup
Yeast - 1 pkg.
Sugar - 1 cup
Shortening - 3 tbsp.
Scalded milk - 1 cup
Nutmeg - 1 tsp.
Salt to taste
Eggs - 2, beaten
Flour - 5 cups
Raisins
Citron, diced
Apples, diced
Directions
GETTING READY
1) Grease a bowl.
2) Grease a cookie sheet.
MAKING
3) In a large bowl, add warm water.
4) Stir in the yeast and 1 tablespoon sugar.
5) Add the shortening to hot milk and stir till melted.
6) Cool.
7) Combine the milk mix, 3/4 cup sugar, nutmeg, salt, and eggs to the yeast.
8) Stir in enough flour to make a soft dough.
9) Transfer dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead till smooth and elastic.
10) Place in the greased bowl and cover.
11) Stand and allow to rise for 1 hour, till doubled in bulk.
12) Punch down and turn onto a lightly floured surface.
13) Round into a ball and cover.
14) Allow to stand for 10 minutes.
15) Pinching out little dough at a time, shape into egg-sized balls, pushing 2 raisins, 2 pieces citron, and 1 piece apple into each ball.
16) Arrange the balls on the cookie sheet and cover.
17) Let it rise for 45 minutes.
18) Remove from the cookie sheet with a floured spatula.
19) Drop into hot deep fat and fry till brown.
20) Drain.
21) Roll in the remaining sugar.
