Dutch Apple Cake Recipe

Ingredients
1 1/2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
1/3 cup sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/3 cup shortening
1 egg, beaten
1/2 cup milk
3 medium apples, peeled, cored and sliced
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
2 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons maple syrup
Directions
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.
Sift together the flour, three tablespoons of the sugar, the baking powder and the salt.
Cut in the shortening with two knives or a pastry blender.
Combine the egg and milk and add to the dry ingredients.
Mix to a soft dough.
Spread the dough in a greased, shallow, eight-inch-square pan.
Place the apples on the dough in rows of overlapping slices.
Mix the remaining sugar and cinnamon and sprinkle over the apples.
Dot with butter.
Bake for forty to forty five minutes.
