Ingredients

250 gms. channa dhal

3/4 teaspoon turmeric powder

50 gms bottle gourd, red pumpkin, or brinjals

4 teaspoons sugar

4 tablespoons tamarind water

1 1/2 tablespoons ghee

1/4 teaspoon asafetida powder

1 teaspoon salt

Directions

Wash and soak the dhal for an hour or so.
Cut the vegetable into large pieces.
Heat the ghee on a moderate fire and fry the asafetida powder.
Add the dhal at once with the vegetable and turmeric powder.
Keep stirring till it gets quite browned.
Put in three cups of water and cover.
Cook for about twenty minutes till the dhal gets quite soft.
Add the sugar, salt and tamarind water and a little more water if necessary.
Cook on a moderate fire.
After five minute mash the dhal roughly, so that you have bits of dhal but not a paste.
Mash the vegetable too, to blend some of it with the dhal.
