Add 1/2 cup sugar and pineapple.
Place in saucepan over low heat, stirring constantly, until thickened.
Remove from heat; add gelatin.
Stir until gelatin is dissolved.
Set in pan of cold water or ice cubes to cool.
Beat egg whites until stiff peaks form.
Add remaining sugar; fold into pineapple mixture.
Combine crumbs and butter; place 2/3 of the crumbs in 9 x 9-inch pan.
Pour in pudding mixture; sprinkle remaining crumbs on top.
Chill; cut in squares.
