1 whole wheat sandwich loaf, sliced lengthwise
 
11/2 packages (8-ounce size) cream cheese, softened
 
11/2 cups chopped dates
 
11/2 cups crushed pineapple, drained thoroughly
 
1 cup finely chopped nuts Butter or margarine

Directions

Unsliced sandwich bread usually must be purchased at a specialty bakery and ordered ahead. Have it sliced lengthwise into six long slices, with crusts removed when ready to use, trim end crusts. Flatten each slice slightly with rolling pin. Combine cream cheese, dates, pineapple, and nuts. Spread bread with butter and then with filling. Roll slices tightly as for a jelly roll, starting with the short end. Wrap each roll in plastic wrap. Chill one hour or more. (Recipe may be made to this point a day ahead.) Cut each roll into 8 sandwiches. An electric knife does the job easily, or uses a very sharp bread knife.
