Ingredients

 
Milk-1/2 cup
 
Sugar-1/2 cup
 
Salt-1 1/2 teaspoons
 
Shortening-1/4 cup
 
Water-1/2 cup, warm
 
Cakes yeast, active dry or compressed-2 packages
 
Eggs-2, beaten
 
All-purpose flour-5 cups, sifted
 
Egg Yolk-1, beaten
 
For Crumb topping
 
Butter or margarine-2 tablespoons
 
Sugar-2 tablespoons
 
All-purpose flour-1/3 cup, sifted
 
Cinnamon-1/2teaspoon
 
For Date Filling
 
Dates-1 cup chopped, pitted
 
Brown sugar-1/4cup
 
Water-1/2 cup
 
Nuts- 1/2 cup chopped
 
Lemon juice-1 tablespoon

Directions

GETTING READY
1) Take a large mixing bowl and add together all ingredients with a fork.

MAKING
2)In a saucepan, scald milk, add sugar, salt and shortening.
3)Cool to lukewarm.
4)In a large mixing bowl, add water and yeast.
5)Dissolve yeast and add lukewarm milk mixture.
6)Add eggs and 3 cups, beat until smooth.
7)Add remaining 2 cups of flour and beat.
8)Knead the dough on a lightly floured board until smooth and elastic.
9)Take a greased bowl and put the dough in it. Brush with melted shortening
10)Cover the bowl and let dough rise to double for an hour.
11)To make date filling- In a saucepan, add all ingredients and bring to a boil on medium heat. Keep stirring constantly.
12)Continue to boil until mixture is thick enough to spread.
13)Remove from heat and cool.
14)Then, punch down the dough and knead a bit. Divide dough in half.
15)Roll out each half into an oblong about 16x8 inches.
16)Spread half the Date Filling down center third of each oblong.
17)Cut 15 slits in dough along each side of filling, making strips about 1 inch wide.
18)Fold strips at an angle across filling, alternating from side to side.
19)Take a greased baking sheet and put the strips. If desired, form into a ring, placing one end in the other.
20)Seal together firmly. Cover.
21)Leave it to rise in a warm place for about 1 hour.
22)Brush cakes with mixture of 1 egg yolk and 2 tablespoons milk.
23)Sprinkle Crumb Topping and bake at 350 degrees for about 35 minutes.

SERVING
24)Serve the Date braided cake as a dessert.
