Classic Date Nut Bread Recipe

3/4 cup walnuts, chopped
 
1 cup dates, pitted and chopped
 
1 1//2 teaspoons soda
 
1/2 teaspoon salt
 
3 tablespoons shortening
 
3/4 cup boiling water
 
2 eggs, beaten slightly
 
1 teaspoon vanilla
 
1 cup sugar
 
1 1/2 cups flour, sifted

Directions

Mix walnuts, dates, soda and salt with fork.
Add shortening and water.
Heat oven to 350°.
Add eggs, vanilla, then sugar and flour, beating with fork.
Add date mixture and blend.
Pour into greased and floured loaf pan.
Bake 1 hour or until done.
Chill.
