Traditional Date Cake Recipe

Directions
Bring water to a boil in a saucepan, add soda, stir until dissolved, pour over dates, cool.
Cream together butter and sugar.
Add eggs, one at a time; beat well.
Sift flour with baking powder, cinnamon, and salt, and add to creamed mixture alternately with the water poured off the dates; beat well after each addition.
Stir in dates and vanilla.
Spread in a well greased 9-inch-square pan.
Bake in a moderate oven (350°) for 40 minutes.
When cake is cool, cover with date and walnut frosting.
Frosting Boil together 1 cup water and 1/2 cup each brown sugar and white sugar for 10 minutes.
Add 1/2 cup finely cut dates, 1/2 cup butter, and 1/2 cup walnut meats, chopped.
Continue cooking until thick.
Pour over cool cake.
