Directions
Put the dates and water in a small saucepan and simmer for 15 minutes or until the dates are soft.
Mash the dates into a pulp.
Set aside to cool.
Mix the oats, flour, sugar and allspice together.
Rub in the butter and mix well together.
Lightly butter a 1 1/2 inch (3-cm) deep, 8-inch (20 cm) square pan.
Spread half the flour and butter mixture over the bottom of the pan, pressing it down evenly.
Spread the date pulp over the top and the remaining flour and butter mixture over the dates with your finger-tips.
Bake for 30 minutes.
Remove the pan from the oven.
Cut the mixture into bars in the pan.
Let cool completely before removing from the pan.
