Directions
1 Thoroughly wash the dal.
2 In a bowl, soak the dal for 30 minutes.
3 In a saucepan, boil the water.
4 Drain the dal, and add it to the boiling water along with salt, turmeric and chilli powder.
5 Boil rapidly for a minute and then lower the heat.
6 Cook, covered until the dal is tender, about 1 hour.
7 Mix well using a spoon, without mashing the dal.
8 In a frying pan, heat the butter.
9 Add in the chopped onions and ginger.
10 Add in the other spices and garam masala just before taking it off from the heat.
11 Pour this mixture on to the dal, and stir to mix.
SERVING
12 Serve hot with rice or chapati
