Ingredients

1 tablespoon active dry yeast

1/3 cup warm water (105°- 115°F)

2-2 1/2 cups flour

3 tablespoons sugar

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon grated lemon peel

1 stick unsalted butter, softened

1/4 teaspoon ground mace

1/3 cup warm milk (105°-115°F)

2 eggs

1/2 cup golden raisins

1/2 cup chopped almonds

Sliced almonds

Glaze

1 egg, beaten with 1 tablespoon water

Directions

1 Dissolve yeast in warm water. Set aside for 5 minutes. Combine 1 1/2 cups flour, sugar, salt, lemon peel, butter, and mace in mixing bowl.
2 Add yeast mixture, milk, and eggs. Mix thoroughly. Add enough remaining flour to form a soft dough.
3 Knead in raisins and chopped almonds on lightly floured surface until smooth€”about 10 minutes. Place in greased bowl, turning to coat top.
4 Cover; let rise in warm place until double€”about 1 hour.
5 Punch down dough. Knead the dough on lightly floured surface. Shape into round loaf.
6 Place on greased baking sheet. Let rise in warm place until double€”about 30 minutes.
7 Make glaze and brush on loaf. Using a sharp knife, cut a cross on top of loaf. Sprinkle with sliced almonds. Bake in a preheated 350°F oven 45€”50 minutes or until done. Cool on wire rack.
