Picadillo Cubana Recipe Video

Picadillo is probably one of the most popular Cuban dishes. One of the first Cuban dishes I learned to cook watching my Abuela (grandmother). This is the perfect dish to a feed large group. It was a signature dish at the fire house and when we have get-togethers at our house. To make it healthier I use lean ground beef.

Ingredients

* 3 pound of (Lean) ground beef

* 1 medium onion, finely chopped

* 1 medium green pepper (cored, seeded and chopped)

* 3 garlic gloves, minced

* 1 1/2 cup tomato sauce

* 1 cup vino seco or dry white wine

* 1 teaspoon cumin

* 1 teaspoon oregano

* 1/4 tsp. crushed red pepper flake

* 1 bay leaf

* salt & pepper to taste

* 1/2 cup raisins

* 1/2 cup pimento-stuffed green olives (cut in half)

* 4 tablespoons olive oil

Directions

In a large pot heat 1 teaspoon of olive oil over medium high heat. Add beef, breaking up large chunks with wooden spoon, stirring occasionally and cook until brown, drain excess fat in a colander, set aside.

Add remaining oil to pot, saute onions, green pepper, and garlic until onions are translucent. Return browned meat to pot, and add tomato sauce, vino seco or dry white wine, cumin, oregano, crushed red pepper, bay leaf, salt and pepper. Bring to a boil.

Then reduce to low heat and simmer for 30-40 minutes, stirring frequently. In the last 10 minutes add the raisins and the green olives, continue simmering. Remove the bay leaf before serving.

Serve with Black Beans, Brown Rice, and Baked Plantains.

Editors Review

Cuban beef hash is fabulously diverse from all the meaty treats in the world. Although preparing it might seem intimidating, Juan Montalvo just makes sure that you don't really need to toil hard to prepare this. Perfect to feed a large group, this recipe is totally worth a try.
