Ingredients

2 cups regular all-purpose flour
1 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon each ginger and cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 cup (1/4 lb.) butter or margarine
1/2 cup raisins
1/2 cup chopped nuts (optional)
1 egg, beaten
3/4 cup buttermilk (or regular milk plus 2 teaspoons vinegar)
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon soda

How to make Crumb Coffee Cake Superb

Sift flour, measure, and sift again with the sugar and spices into a bowl.
Cut in the butter until the mixture is crumbly like cornmeal.
Take out 1 cup of this crumbly mixture and set aside.
Stir the raisins and nuts into the remaining crumbly mixture.
Mix together the egg, milk, baking powder, and soda; stir into the flour and butter mixture containing raisins and nuts, just until well mixed.
Spread half of the reserved crumbs (1/2 cup) in the bottom of a greased 8 by 8-inch baking pan.
Pour in the thick batter, spread evenly, then sprinkle the remaining crumbs (1/2 cup) over the top. (Or just sprinkle all the 1 cup crumbs on the top.) Bake in a 375° oven for 40 minutes.
Cool in the pan.
