1) In a deep pan, scald the milk and keep it aside.
2) In a small bowl, beat an egg slightly and keep it ready.
3) In a bowl, mix cornstarch, sugar and salt. Slowly, add in the egg and slowly pour in the scalded milk. Mix well.
4) Transfer the contents to a double boiler and cook for about 15 minutes. Stir the mixture continually with a ladle till it thickens.
5) Remove from heat and let it cool down a bit. Add in vanilla and stir again.

Instead of this filling, you can use sweetened whipped cream.
