1 1/2 cups cranberries
 
1/2 cup sugar
 
2 cups sifted flour
 
3/4 cup sugar
 
1 1/4 teaspoons baking powder
 
1/2 teaspoon salt
 
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
 
1 orange
 
1/4 cup vegetable shortening
 
2 eggs
 
1/2 cup chopped nuts

Directions

In small saucepan, combine cranberries and the 1/2 cup sugar.
Cook over medium heat until sauce bubbles, about 8 to 10 minutes; drain.
Sift together flour, the remaining 3/4 cup sugar, the baking powder, salt, and soda.
Grate peel of orange; squeeze juice into measuring cup.
Add peel and enough water to make 3/4 cup liquid.
Add mixture to dry ingredients with vegetable shortening and eggs; mix well.
Fold in nuts and drained cranberries.
Pour into greased 9x5x3 inch loaf pan.
Bake at 350° for 45 to 50 minutes.
Cool.
