Classic Cheese Strata Recipe
Ingredients
| 8 slices day-old bread | ||
| 8 ounces American or Swiss cheese, sliced | ||
| Eggs | 4 standard | |
| Milk | 2 1/2 Cup (16 tbs) | |
| Onion | 1/4 Cup (16 tbs), finley chopped | |
| Salt | 1 1/2 Teaspoon | |
| Prepared mustard | 1/2 Teaspoon | |
| Pepper | 1 Dash | |
| Paprika | ||
Directions
Trim the crusts from 4 slices of the bread.
Cut the trimmed slices in half diagonally to make 8 triangles; set aside.
Arrange the trimmings and the remaining 4 slices of untrimmed bread to cover the bottom of a 9x9x2-inch baking pan.
Place American or Swiss cheese slices over the bread in the baking pan.
Arrange the reserved 8 bread triangles in 2 rows over the cheese.
(Points will slightly overlap bases of adjacent triangles.) Thoroughly beat the eggs; stir in the milk, finely chopped onion, salt, prepared mustard, and pepper.
Pour the egg mixture over bread and cheese layers in the baking pan.
Sprinkle with paprika.
Cover; let chill in refrigerator several hours or overnight.
Bake, uncovered, in a 325° oven for 1 1/4 hours or till a knife inserted near center comes out clean.
