 3 large apples, pared, quartered, cored, and cut in thick slices
 Firmly packed brown sugar1/2 Cup (16 tbs)
 Mace1 Teaspoon
 1 teaspoon grated lemon rind
 Butter/Margarine2 Tablespoon, melted

Directions

MAKING
1 In a large bowl, sift flour, baking powder, and salt.Stir in granulated sugar and cut in shortening with a pastry blender until the mixture is crumbly.
2 In a 2-cup measure,beat the eggs slightly with milk.Stir into the flour mixture until well-blended. Pour into the greased baking pan, 13x9x2 and arrange the apple slices, overlapping slightly, in rows to cover the top.
3 In a small bowl,combine brown sugar, mace, lemon rind, and melted butter or margarine;sprinkle over the apples.
4 Bake in a moderate oven at 350 degrees farenheit for 30 minutes, or until a wooden pick inserted in the top comes out clean.

SERVING
5 Cut into squares and serve warm, plain or with ice cream or whipped cream (optional)
