Chocolate Butter-Cream Frosting Recipe

4 squares (1-oz size) unsweetened chocolate
 
1/2 cup butter or regular margarine

2-2/3 cups confectioners' sugar
 
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
 
1/8 teaspoon salt

Directions

Fill large bowl half full of ice cubes; add 1/2 cup cold water.
In top of double boiler, combine chocolate and butter.
Place over hot, not boiling, water, stirring occasionally, until chocolate is melted.
Remove from hot water.
Quickly stir in egg.
Add sugar, 1/3 cup water, the vanilla, and salt; stir until well blended.
Place pan in prepared ice water.
With portable electric mixer at high speed, beat until of spreading consistency—about 5 minutes.
Makes enough to fill and frost a 9-inch layer cake
