Chocolate Applesauce Cake Recipe

Ingredients
3 cups sifted cake flour
3/4 cup cocoa, sifted
2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
3/4 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
3/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1/2 cup vegetable shortening
1/2 cup butter or margarine
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 eggs, well beaten
1 cup thick sweetened applesauce
3/4 cup sour milk or buttermilk
3/4 cup nuts, chopped
Directions
Sift flour, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and spices together and blend; set aside.
Cream shortening and butter; gradually add sugar, creaming until fluffy.
Add eggs in thirds, beating thoroughly after each addition.
Beating only until smooth after each addition, alternately add dry ingredients in fourths and a mixture of the applesauce and sour milk in thirds to the creamed mixture.
Stir in the chopped nuts.
Turn batter into an ungreased 10-inch tubed pan having a removable bottom.
Bake at 350°F about 1 hour, or until cake tests done.
Cool 15 minutes before removing from pan.
