Beat 4 egg whites until stiff, adding sugar gradually; fold in 4 well- beaten egg yolks.
Sift flour with salt and baking powder; fold into egg white mixture.
Fold in half the melted chocolate and vanilla.
Spread thinly in waxed paper-lined 11 x 16-inch pan.
Bake at 400 degrees for 15 minutes.
Sprinkle cloth evenly with powdered sugar.
Turn out cake on prepared cloth; trim edges.
Remove paper; let cool.
Cut in quarters.
Spread 3 quarters with whipped cream; stack.
Top with plain layer.
Combine remaining chocolate, 1/2 cup powdered sugar and 1 tablespoon hot water in double boiler; blend well.
Add remaining egg; beat well.
Beat in butter.
Spread on top and sides of layers.
