Ingredients

 
3/4 c. shortening
 
1 egg
 
1 tsp. vanilla
 
1 c. (packed) brown sugar
 
1/4 c. maraschino cherries, chopped
 
1/2 c. chopped nuts
 
2 c. sifted flour
 
1/2 tsp. soda
 
1/2 tsp. salt
 
1/2 tsp. cream of tartar

Directions

Combine shortening, egg, vanilla and brown sugar in mixing bowl; add cherries and nuts.
Sift dry ingredients; add gradually to brown sugar mixture.
Blend thoroughly.
Shape into rolls; wrap in waxed paper.
Chill until firm.
Cut into 1/8-inch slices; place on ungreased baking sheet.
Bake at 400 degrees for 6 to 8 minutes.
Cool 1 to 2 minutes before removing from pan.
May freeze dough wrapped in foil.
